Commission welcomes Prison Service's ‘honest and rigorous’ review into race equality in prisons
The Equality and Human Rights Commission today welcomed the honest and rigorous way the Prison Service has approached a review of their progress in addressing race equality in prisons, including a decision to take the unusual step of inviting some of their sternest critics – the Commission among them - to judge progress for themselves.

Equality & Human Rights Commission launches competition to find a thousand portraits of young Britain
Young Brits at Art will see young people using self-portraiture or pictures to tell their own story - whether about themselves, their families or the communities they come from - and is aimed at helping schools and youth centres deal with difference and diversity in an entertaining and accessible way.

Greater transparency required for equality in higher education, says UCU
UCU today welcomed the Equality Challenge Unit's 'Equality in Higher Education' report, but said that greater transparency was needed across the higher education sector to ensure that equality of pay and opportunity is fair and is seen to be fair.

Civil Servants celebrate diversity
Civil servants from across the country have been honoured by the Cabinet Secretary in the second Civil Service Diversity and Equality Awards.
The awards, held in Birmingham, celebrated individuals and teams who have shown outstanding achievement in promoting equality and diversity in the Civil Service and the delivery of public services.

MP praises statistics body's decision to start counting gay population
A Lib Dem MP who had called on the Office for National Statistics to include a question on sexual orientation in the 2011 Census has welcomed their decision to start asking survey participants if they are straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or other.

Equality Bill and flexible working extension will help deliver fairness at work
Welcoming the Equality Bill in the Queen's Speech today (Wednesday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'With the gender pay gap moving in the wrong direction, the Equality Bill is much needed. The decision to press ahead with extending the right to request flexible working means that ministers have come to the obvious conclusion that a mere right to request does not threaten a single job.

Equality Bill Confirmed in Legislative Programme
Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Equality, welcomed the announcement today by Her Majesty the Queen that the Equality Bill will be brought forward in Parliament within the next year.
The Equality Bill will significantly strengthen and streamline discrimination legislation to make Britain a fairer and more equal place, including banning age discrimination, increasing transparency on gender pay gaps, and rooting out inequality.

New Equality & Human Rights Commission Inquiries to address discrimination and promote good practice in the construction and financial services sectors
The Equality & Human Rights Commission today announced two formal Inquiries into the financial services and construction sectors.
The Equality & Human Rights Commission has evidence suggesting that a high proportion of women working in some areas of financial services are paid less than their male counterparts and suffer harassment at work. Evidence seen by the Commission also suggests that there are more barriers to employment for ethnic minority employees in the construction industry than other parts of the private sector.
